A large porcupine (Hystrix africaeaustralis) was spotted last night (Monday 2 July) in the field across the way from The Wild Fig Restaurant, on the banks of the Liesbeek.

Security guard, Freddy Kabunda, was lucky enough to see the porcupine from quite close. I have asked him to be on the lookout for porcupines whilst on patrol.

See this article on Wikipedia.

A waitress at The Wild Fig, reports seeing a porcupine in Strubens road, and there have been other reports of people witnessing porcupines crossing the Liesbeek Parkway.

Hopefully some one will catch one on camera.

A Liesbeek Tortoise

June 14th, 2007

Here is the first photo of the fauna that inhabits the reaches of the Liesbeek River.

I found this tortoise crossing Liesbeek Avenue. I photographed him in the road and then gently put him on the side of the road to which he was headed.

I have no idea what species this is but I will do my best to find out. If anyone knows please let me know. Leave a comment.
